This is working in an academy last season of how I actually went about implementing the 5 C’s. The first thing I did was profile the players, so across each of the five C’s we had five key behaviours for each one and the players self-assessed, firstly, on how they saw themselves on each of the five C’s then the coaches did an assessment and then I did my own assessment from observations and from chatting to the players, so having one to ones. So, using a triangulated approach basically you get a much more accurate profile of where the player sits in the 5 C’s.
The second part of the program then, is around mental skills education and performance reviews, so sort of periodically, we have one to ones with every player in the team, which I think it’s important, so that you break down barriers so that everybody gets sport psychology. I mean everybody would get a gym program and work with the sport scientists, so I don’t see psychology as anything different. I guess this is where it starts to link into seeing sports psychology in a positive light rather than about fixing problems. Everybody gets sport psychology. Everybody can benefit.
